Workshop: Vector Critique #18

Vectortuts+ is all about helping people turbo charge their skills, and today we have another special community post that will help our readers take their images to the next level. The best thing is, you can be part of it too! Find out more at the jump.

How to Participate:

  • This workshop contributor has offered a piece of work that they would like help with, please keep this in mind when you share your thoughts. The images are not perfect, but they can be with the right advice and some friendly encouragement. (Vectortuts+ reserves the right to delete any rude comments)
  • If you’re better with pictures (let’s face it, most of us are) feel free to take a screenshot of the image using Little Snapper, Skitch or a similar program and paste a link to the annotated image in the comments section with an explanation of the tweaks.

If you want to take part in the next Vectortuts+ Workshop:

Add your work to our facebook photo gallery or submit it via the Tuts+ Workshop form, with a description about the piece and the help/advice you’re looking for. We will chose one to be published on our site as part of the next Vectortuts+ Workshop, if you’re not chosen straight away – don’t worry – your work will be chosen for a future session.

Absolutely astonishing, almost impecable. My only complain is the light coming from his back, i think it’s a little bit cheesy. Maybe with a different blending mode and/or trasnparancy value it would be more modern-looking. But that’s just my opinion, the piece is amazing nonetheless.

    • Matt

Agreed with Bryan. I think the flare of light from behind him is the only thing that really doesn’t work. Everything else is impeccably rendered. The flare just seems unevenly balanced, with there not being a true “central point” from which it originates. If you want to keep it, perhaps having them all centered from the power source in Iron Man’s chest (You can keep them coming from behind, but use that as the centerpoint) it might work out a little better.

Amazing rendering though. Great depth and color blending. The mask is particularly exceptional.

Everyone can be a critic, but not many can be the artist… That said:
Very, very cool! Don’t let those “who can’t” put your work down, it is marvelous!

  • Joe st onge

i would agree with Bryan, otherwise a stunning piece of work…. marvelous (no pun intended)

  • Levi

This is insanely good. Wow. I agree with the light critique. Also, the type sticks out to me, although I’m not really sure what to say about it (which doesn’t make for a great critique, I realize). Perhaps the font seems a bit compacted which sticks out from the height and dominance of Iron Man standing on top of the hill.

However, wow. This is ridiculously good.

  • Brandon

Like everyone has said, this is an amazing piece. The absolute only thing I could think to say is to revisit the clouds. Stylistically they seem a bit out of place and underdeveloped, but they play a pretty minor role and aren’t absolutely detracting. It could be the multiply where the clouds overlap, or the large shape areas on the left side, or the hard edges. Just some stuff to consider; otherwise, great work!

  • Philip

Very nice work! I agree with everyone else and their points and also to add my own, where is his foot?

  • Shane

I agree with everyone above – this is really a good piece of work.

I think Brandon is right about the background, it is a completely different style. The feel of the main figure is rather acrylic Art Deco, and the background seems to be a sort of lose watercolor for the clouds and the sort of gouache for the buildings.

I also have a feeling that there is something wrong with the perspective. Perhaps it has to do with the background. Not really sure, and I don’t think it is a lot off – which makes it harder to spot/fix.

    Hope this helps.

A great piece of work, no doubt about that.

What I noticed first though, is the somewhat arkward shape of the right upper arm. Even when I take the volume of the golden armor plate on top of his biceps into consideration, I would say his upper arm is broken close to the shoulder joint and bent outward and backward a little bit. It looks almost like his right upper arm is mounted the wrong way with the triceps facing forward (maybe this describes it even better).

I don’t mean to be rude at all, I very much admire this talent, I am lightyears from producing similar results, but the arm issue jumped right into my face at first glance, and my experience tells me that when something doesn’t feel right in the first second, it almost always isn’t right for real.

Does anyone agree, or do my eyes need a new calibration?

    • Will

I saw this too. The bicep armor seems to me to need to rotate left.

I agree with most other comments regarding clouds and mix of styles. However I think with some tweaking this mix would be fine. Perhaps if the city was less evenly lit and the beams behind him were from a sunrise? Just a thought.

      Overall, a great looking piece.
