Inkscape, Vector without Limitations

Inkscape is frequently mentioned, and lauded, as one of the best examples of open-source software available today. It is a mature, feature-full and flexible product, thanks to a very dedicated developer community. The latest version, 0.48, adds new tools, such as the Airbrush (which many have longed for), and advanced path editing, among many other additions and improvements.

Vector graphics are becoming increasingly important at the turn of this decade, now that the World Wide Web has begun its transition towards HTML5 technologies. All the major Web browsers are striving to conform to the SVG specification, as the attractiveness of scalable, high definition, three-dimensional, and Flash-free Web sites and games is irresistible. The future is bright, but the true outcome will ultimately depend on one decisive factor: user and developer adoption.

This is why a non-proprietary authoring tool such as Inkscape is important: it is a professional package for creating quality vector graphics which is freely available for everybody to use. Whether you wish to create Web site mockups, wallpapers to share with an Internet community, high-quality advertisements for the newspaper industry, digital art for a gallery exposition, or simply a Happy Birthday for your grandmother, Inkscape is available now and without limitations, to help you achieve your goal.

I’m a developer that has to a designers job sometimes (more often that I would like). I’ve become quite good with PS and it would be a great to have knowledge of this vector tool in my toolbox.

    Can it cook my Breakfast??

After reading through “Vector Basic Training” by Von Glitschka, I was stoked to jump into the world of vector illustration. When I came to the realization that Illustrator was out of my immediate price range, it was a relief and a revelation to come across Inkscape. I love this little program, it’s programmers, and its community of talented people always seeking to add in new features. I was extremely happy to see some dedicated Inkscape love on my favorite vector tutorial site.
If I won a copy of “Inkscape 0.48 Illustrator’s Cookbook”, I would absorb every page, learn some cool new things to apply to the fundamentals I already know, and create some sweet vector masterpieces.
Thanks for all the cool tutorials and inspiration!

I hope the book is a success. I have been trying to find tutorials for inkscape so we can put it into the production workflow at my shop. I started tinkering with it about a year ago when one of my customers brought in a file and needed to tweek it. As far as open source programs go this is the program that sets the bar. Kudos to the folks that put inkscape together and you guys for (finally) making a book. :D

Nice, I would love to try my hand at a different illustration program.

Am a UI designer, Inkscape has helped a lot in making ui elements. Really simple and intuitive

I’ve already done some vector work with Inkscape and I’m really blown away by all the features this application offers. And therein lies the rub: I rather feel like a waiter than a cook, as I’m not really able to keep track of all the great features of Inkscape. That’s why I really could need a cookbook that helps me to use the full power of this wonderful vector program.

I’m a developer/designer and uses vector drawings for my UI and Icons. I’ve used Inkscape but I am using Adobe Illustrator at the moment because my skills in illustrator is better, but who knows whit a book like this maybe I could up my skills in Inkscape and change back. Inkscape is a GREAT piece of software and I’m a fan of OpenSource software

I won’t talk about my experience with Inkscape.
I’ll talk about my non-experience with it.
I already use some programs and had some bugs that ruin all my produtivity (many, many times).
So, because of it, I really hope to win a copy of “Inkscape 0.48 Illustrator’s Cookbook”.
To learn, had better practices, better produtivity and crash the barricade of the ‘same old things’.
    Thanks :)

I’ve been struggling my way through to create decent graphics but would really use this book to get good. I have it on my wish list just in case I don’t win.

This book would take me one step further in my attempt to set my old pc up only with OSS software and still use it as a design tool. I already use Inkscape but feel not quite pleased as I use in a quite superficial way as opposed to Xara, Corel or AI. AND my inner kid could really use a bigger toybox.

Inkscape really boosts me to go drawing and creating vector art into extreme stage (since I knew it 2 years ago), day and night Inkscape is my first program to open when I start drawing vector. I think that inkscape is an ‘overpower’ tool compared to other vector drawing program. Its open source makes Inkscape can be developed beyond its competitor or combined by taking competitors’ “plus” features. At Indonesia, Inkscape hasn’t been known well than other program (CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator, etc). I want to show to Indonesia that by Inkscape I can create the same or even more, so I need the cookbook to help me telling Indonesia about this wonderful overpower vector program.

I am but a poor designer who cannot afford the incredible price of Adobe photoshop. I have been using Inkscape for some time now. Please send me a the Illustrator cookbook. I will be much grateful.

    Hi guy’s…………….

It’s been a long time since I use the Inkscape, honestly, this is the first program where I draw my first illustration (2006. for Jazz&Blues festival KM) cause I find the inkscape* more appropriate then the corel where I worked only…..

But there are new times and new technologies so I temporarily started using Illustrator and other Adobe’s applications, without which even today can not function!

When now, after so many years I look at Inkscape just can not believe that this expansion occurred in less than a few years and I can say that I did not follow a few…

I can juts say HAIL to the glory!

Helps me a lot, as its free and easy-to-use. Very helpful for me as I couldn’t afford Adobe Illustrator.

  • Annukka

I’m a teacher and have been thinking about starting to offer an Inkscape course instead of Illustrator because students often find the latter too expensive.

  • Ravital

I don’t have any experience with inkscape, but I would really like to learn it.

  • T.g

It is always worth Learning New stuff in Illustrator or photoshop:)

I think Vector is one of the biggest parts of graphic design and illustration. In fact, IT IS… honestly, pure photoshop wizards (like I once was) will not make it in the print world for a SECOND without a solid background in Vector Graphics… not to mention, If your not making your logos in VECTOR.. SORRY KID, your not holding ground with your clients!

  • Sue Jones

Illustrator is my very favorite drawing program. Winning the cookbook will help me get back to work after a forced sabbatical because of the 2008 recession. Good tools make great projects :)

For us , Buying illustrater is big deal and pirated copies is certainly not my stuff. i started searching for its subsitute and found inkscape. intially i was told its as good as illustrator…i didnt know anything about illustrator so i started learning it and very soon i found the simple yet powerful tool. fortunately my designer team also gave me copy of AI, i must say it is equally powerful..but when it comes to drawing free..it is true to its tag line, Draw freely..i am gimper too…

i want to do artworks again…. i want to start from the beginning of becoming a grafix artist…. a path that i did not choose before… i want to feel the fulfillment… as for my current state today, i feel incomplete…
i should have chosen my passion before.. but its not to late for everything to happen,,,,
i want to grow and develop my skills as a grafix artist….that’s why this year, i just started learning about grafix design on the web and and i have been using illustrator for couple of months now and following illustrator tutorials and it was very tricky to use…then i found inkscape as an alternative to it.. as compared to illustrator, inkscape is more easier to use and there are some tools that inkscape have that illustrator does not have… it was overwhelming to know that there are contests like this that supports grafix artists and illustrators that are craving for inkscape tutorials..just like me, i also crave for more inkscape tutorials… if ever i won a copy, i would want to share through writing my own tutorials on the web, the techniques that could be learned on the cookbook, or even some new discoveries while following through the book … its very inviting to do and contribute to art… and I want to use inkscape as my “hammer and chisel” in sculpting artworks and also my skills… :)

I already use Inkscape for all my Vectoring tasks works great, save the occasional hard crash (hey it’s written in C++ you can’t expect absolutely no bugs!). But I *know* that I only use a handful of the features, with this book I’ll be able to find out what they are and become a vectormeister!

  • http://fossgrafis.com Aditia A. Pratama

this is Awesome…hope can win this..I use Inkscape for daily design, it could be helpful

Do I still have time to enter?

I remember downloading Inkscape many many months ago and oh, it was so damn difficult to use! Now the amazing world of vectors is fascinating me more than ever, but as a student, I can’t afford Illustrator, and without the book I wouldn’t know where to start and what to do next. (And as an avid cooker, I wouldn’t mind getting one more cookbook!)

I have never used ink scape before in my design field
