I’m not a graphic designer and have never worked with one so I was wondering if using stock photo as a reference to trace the outline, is the norm, or most people draw it from scratch?

      Hey Noah,

It’s not uncommon to use stock as a reference for professional illustrations. From my own work, I’ve used stock many times for clients, either from what they’ve provided me or from purchasing professional stock (always make sure you use the correct licenses for you work in this respect!).

I highly recommend checking out one big name which comes to mind who has work widely published and he uses stock references: http://www.crisvector.com :)
