    Improve the site design :P

New year, new design… why not?

  2. Michał Czernow says:

    1. I like everything – it’s good as it is – mostly because of the great content.
    2. I’m an Inkscape user, so… more Inkscape :).

  3. matt says:

    1. The quality of the content
2.1. start an Affiliate Programm for the plus membership
2..2. publish the Tutorials in book-form

  4. 1. Occasionally throwing in some other things besides tuts (once in a while)
    2. Profile pages for tutorial writers

  5. I LOVE Vectortuts. I’m a plus member and find that part very useful too.

I find it very useful with the royalty free patterns, brushes, textures too. Especially when they can be used in commercial projects too.

    Things to improve:

There’s such a wealth of goodies now, that it’s hard to find stuff. Even things that you know are there are hard to find with the search function, so fixing that would a huge improvement.

Other than that I’d love to see some Painter tutorials.

And keep up the good job! It’s awesome!

    Thank you! :)

  6. Niek says:

    1. A weekly inspiration like on vectips.com
    2. More tutorials! And tutorials with new effects, animations whatever try something new! That would be awesome!

  7. Fatam says:

1- I love how active the site is..
2- I use inkscape so probably more about it as it’s a strong app that needs more attention .

    Thanks :)

  8. Ryan Hasan says:

This is an awesome network of sites. The only thing that could make it even better is if there were more Plus Packs, and/or more source files that allow commercial usage.

  9. Christian Tobler says:

I think it would be really nice to see who wins the “Comment and Win”. I always wondered who the lucky person was :D

  10. kasakka says:

When you do some sort of “Great vector illustrations of __” thing, limit the amount of pics to 10-15. More than that and I’ll just skim thru it, without paying attention to the fine details in each picture. A lot of other sites do these collections and when you’ve got a 100 pics to scroll thru, the truly exceptional ones don’t get the attention they deserve. Make a stand, pick the ones you REALLY like.

I’d also like to see more tutorials on the more advanced features of Illustrator. The tutorials that cover the tools are often more useful than the ones that describe building a certain picture.

  11. Raoul says:

LESS IS BEST my friends !

(before begin, just appology my Really bad english, the langage is bad but the ideas maybe better ?! ^^ )

I think much people on vector tuts+ (and on others “brands”) are waiting every weeks, everyday (hours ? ) a new tutorial and finally when it come it’s “Learn how to make something you’d probably know but with 2 + hours :D” i’m kidding but much last tutorial make me feel like this how we says in french “la montagne qui accouche d’une sourie” (http://www.google.com.au/language_tools ). Much tuts come with some importants files missing, with a purpose that is not really “interesting” (except Jeffrey way’s ones :p ), etc. etc. and finally it give a bad feeling to the site.

All that to say that maybe you could look for more “pro” (i don’t like this word but…) tutorials, asking to the people who make it to make something really instructive and well constructed.
When i first point to your site it’s because i was looking for aftereffects tutorials and i find This tutorial : http://ae.tutsplus.com/tutorials/motion-graphics/create-an-animated-homage-to-bruce-lee-day-1/ Well that’s what i mean ! A well structured tutorial with really helpfull tips a “strong” creative background and finally when you finish to read/look you could say “i’ve learned something here”.

Well i woulnd’t give you some headaches with my poor langage so i’ll finish with that.

Give to the people what they expecting for, maybe LESS tuts but BETTER ones. (and as you see i don’t make a comparison with video copilot :p )

Maybe, by putting some “degrees” to the tuts ? beginners/more advanced/killer ones and i think too separate the free things from the main content, it’ll give a better vision on the whole site.

If i’ve got some more “opinion” or “suggestions” as modest as they are, i’ll post them.

    Best from Paris,
    R.

Ps: Yes as Kate England make something for the search tool

    Ps+: Before i forgot, THANK YOU !!! ^^

  12. Bhargav says:

    HEY! Im Fifth!!!

    Things I love

    1. The site looks awesome.
    2. Filtered tutorials (though they are less) are really nice and they are truely inspirational.
    3. I like how you guys aren’t putting ads down our throats like other websites who use gorilla tactics to get people to click on ads (smart, but not nice :[ )

    ________________________________________
Things you could do to make the site even better

    1. The design is fine. Only looking at Vector tuts, there needs to be a series starting. Kind of like Javascript from Null, you should have some kind of training of softwares as well (text would be fine too).

    2. Anyways, the site is amazing, but the tutorials are kind of, too, well they could be better. I know the Plus network just started but all the good tutorials are going there.. which is understandable, but its happening to all the good ones now. Please keep the Plus ones minor.

  13. Ethan says:

    1 tutorial everyday!

    • Ab says:

I would rather have posts come once a week if it means golden content every time. I feel that PSDtuts is suffering from sacrificing good content to maintain a higher post frequency, and I certainly don’t want Vectortuts to do the same.

    • Metin Ucar says:

Ethan, that’d be overwhelming. One tutorial, but a really good one, per week would suffice.

  14. I LIKE
Love the content. Easily best tutorials from Rype and Andreas.

    WOULD LIKE TO SEE
    1. A general tuts+ refresh is probably in order, since the style has been copied in countless other blogs it could probably use a newer, more distinctive makeover.

    2. More tutorials with precision detail on things like placing paths, creating meshes and other illustrator fundamentals.

  15. Khan says:

I like the amount of info available.

I dislike the quality of the tutorials. You want people to pay for a premium service yet the tutorials seem so nulled, unprofessional and not on the cutting edge of design. Maybe its time for the Editor to switch it up, or switch him up.

  16. Elektric says:

More Tom Whalen… And get Mike Mac to do a tut.
Put tutorials out on video. Oh yes… please get James White to do a tutorial.
    Now happy holidays to all.

  17. J Henderson says:

    1. I personally like the site it’s very helpful!! I think that it’s helping shape me into a better illustrator!!!

    2. My idea for improvement would be live tutorial broadcasts!! Basically allowing plus viewers to ask realtime questions to each designer / editor!! I know you have screen casts but to have real time feedback I feel would be excellent!! This way you can give goodies away online and interact with your audience. I would love to see Envato make an account on Ustream, Livestream, that would be tremendous. I would also like to see alot of tutorials dealing with other adobe applications!!

  18. Modi says:

wel it’a great site , i would only recommend to improve the content , its awsome no doubt about it but , i think to rise up the bar , rise the level ,would make this site amazing great excellent!, hope you read all the comments and thanks really thanks this site…

  19. Ashish says:

I like the detail in which the tutorials are explained.

On the flip side, I am a bit disappointed with the site’s heavy focus on Adobe Illustrator. It would be awesome to see some love shared for open source (but equally powerful) apps like Inkscape and Xara.

  20. sam sam says:

good good good ! i ‘m a member plus too, i my opignon, everything is good,
just continue like this ! . We ask more only because we love !

Just one thing : can you help us , to be more creative . This is , i my opignon, the most difficult thing to learn, and the best thing you can give.

    :)

    happy holidays to all !!

  21. sam sam says:

in this effect (learn creativity), maybe sometime you could make some traduction in french ? (maybe with a tool like google translate API or something like that ?

  22. Tanner says:

Add more how to tuts. like learning illustrator how
    to use tools and such.

Your site is awesome and will probably only get
    awesomer!

  23. Andrus Rähni says:

I would like to see more webdesign tutorials by using illustrator. And of course more new design and trends in Vectorgraphic society :)

Merry Christmas (In estonian: Häid Jõule!)

  24. I love the quality tutorials, the inspirational roundups, and the interviews.

Something that I think needs addressing is the search function. It currently ranks search results by newest, rather than relevancy. This is odd, and applies to all the Envato sites: Tuts+, AppStorm, etc

    Thanks guys!

  25. Jeremy Cassisi says:

    <3 Interviews! More Interviews!

  26. sriganesh says:

at first thanks for your great site. and my country they ask coredraw intead of illustrator and iam little good at illustrator : so teach soem coredraw tuts
    2. in illustrator need designs like tshirt, skateboard and the advance technique using the tools.
    3. creating high resolution icons | so glossy or shinny icons from illustrator.
    thanks sriganesh.m
    -=-=-=
Merry xmas and happy new year 2010

  27. Gerard Cruz says:

    Uhm, lemme see.
    1. All the things are properly organized and the design is awesome.
    2. I think there should be more tutorials in enhancing ones capabilities in using Illustrator.

  28. ymo says:

    What I love:
Your consistency in providing clear and relevant content

    What to improve:
1- more tutorials mixing various technique and tools for the end result (Illustrator, then Photoshop to animate in Flash, etc.)
2- more server side recaps and walk through
3- more print based design with workflow and print management
4- a friendly way to moderate comments, avoiding that the constructive ones get lost between first-great-tutorial-thank-you-here-is-my-own-blog ones

PS: don’t waste time changing the layout: content is critical and the current one works ok

    Thanks!!

  29. 0078a says:

I must say, being a plus member is great. An improvement that I would like to see is when I see a great plus tutorial and I want to read it, I have to login and then try to find the plus content. It would be much more convenient since the login form is already on the page to just login and the content be available. Keep up the good work.

  30. Nicole Ho says:

    1. The design is awesome.

    2. You could improve on the search function.
It doesn’t always give me all I want.

    Merry Xmas and Happy NYE.

  31. arnold says:

    * What is 1 aspect of the site you love about Vectortuts+?

    quality tuts.

    * What is 1 aspect of the site we could improve on?
let some tutorials source file be downloadble.XD
and those tuts that are awesome and cool , make it not downloadble.

  32. jessiegirl says:

    love the site,

i would like to see tutorials that help improve my work flow. Things to make me faster at what i already do. Because while i love seeing the tutorials you do put up i feel like there are shortcuts i should be taking but don’t know about yet.

  33. NR4TR says:

    1. detailed tutorials both for beginners and those who reached quite a good lvl
    2. i’d like to see here a kind of button/link like “printable version” or etc.
not for printing but to have a version of page with tutorial that has no comments, footer, header, menu bar, the tut only.
looking forward to ur reply (=

  34. Seth says:

#1- I love all the great content, from beginner stuff to advanced. I improved my illustrator skills and knowledge 200% by using your site alone!

#2- Personally i love icon design. I would like to see more high quality icons designed. Really advanced, realistic icons, like found on a Mac OS. Also more of making photos into vectors would be nice.

  35. Steve Rose says:

    1. Vector Tutorials
    2a. More Fireworks tutorials
2b. More information about advanced and creative ways to use or combine various tools. Showing how to create a cute animal using basic techniques gets old after a while.

  36. jaded63 says:

    1. Don’t change the design look/feel. Content is most important.
    2. Screencasts are my favorite.
    3. Ads don’t bother me – I know they’re necessary.
    4. I use the Search often with little problem.
    5. Illustrator is the industry standard so I think it’s fine to have the tutorials focus on using Illustrator.

  37. Metin Ucar says:

    Hello there Envato team,

I’ve been hanging around your truly amazing websites for almost a year, and must confess what I’ve learned on your websites is definitely more than what I knew about photoshop and illustrator before.

Roughly, you guys already have great sites here in terms of quality of content, design and navigation. However, there is always something to be improved. So, below I enumerated some of them.

1- You must fix the search function. I’d say it doesn’t work at all.Searching for previously viewed articles or tutorial via the search box is sometimes, let’s say, pain in the ass.

2- You got great contributors, authors, over here. Though in general the quality of articles is more or less the same, sometimes it’s hard to follow some of the authors articles. I guess you checked them before publishing, but I think you must evaluated the quality of articles more carefully.

3- The tutorials could be oriented towards more advanced users, while techniques for beginners are being included in the tutorials. Because, I often feel repeating the same techniques over and over again.

4- As there are many authors contributing and a strong community is following you, you can expand your Freebies section. I’m sure there would be many people willing to give away their brushes, vectors, etc. just to promote themselves. Doing this would without doubt result in satisfaction of you, the ones who provide freebies, and the ones like me are in the need of help of free additional elements.

5- Sometimes the links to the files that are used in tutorials here are broken. Either the authors or you guys must check broken links often, and if the links are broken alternative ones should be provided.

6- Each author must have a unique page filled with their outstanding works, info about them, etc. over here. It’d be nice touch.

    That’s all I wanna say.

    Keep up good work guys.

    Cheers.

  38. I would think having more video tutorials and possibly live chat sessions would be a great way to connect better with your readers. Smashing Magazine already has such a dedicated following, but its good to be cautious of become too big and forget the little guy/gal.

  39. OUTrum says:

search engine must be improved ;]

  40. Sean Hodge says:
    Author

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

  41. Anne H. says:

I would love to see more Inkscape tutorials ranging from beginner to advanced. The site is wonderful and content is great. Thank you!

  42. Saurabh says:

    Hi Sean,
Vectortuts is a booster for any beginner to gain impetus in vector design world. I love almost everything about this site. I love the diversity in tutorials. That is because each author has his/her own style and approach for creating the designs. And it is always good to see how other designers work.
Interviews and weekly inspirations are good too.

    What we need to improve?
Till date, there is a huge pool of quality tutorials on Illustrator, ranging from beginner to advanced level. We have almost chewed up every juice of intermediate level design tutorials.
If the tutorials till now could be categorized into 3 different sections : Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced; the visitors will find it convenient to jump into appropriate level.
Next, advanced tutorials need priority, along with a lot of innovation. We already had a lot on basic shapes, tool tips, objects, patterns etc. It would be nice to see advanced tutorials on:
    1. icon designing
    2. print designing and printing tips
    3. Typography
    4. Techniques to switch between different applications; say from Illustrator to Photoshop and then to HTML.

Some comment moderation is required. Sometimes constructive feedback is left aside and people go off track, talking their own issues. As everyone said, search function needs a little improvement.

Finally, I really like the enthusiasm and responsibility of Sean (the Editor).

  43. devdsine says:

    Start a forum page.
That will help users to clarify doubts, and also will be an opportunity to chat with the Masters

  44. devDsine says:

    start a forum page

  45. greg anderson says:

i love the how-to’s, very good for inspiration and ideas. The designers should be absolute sure that the process is in full and works; some have missed a step or not fully explained.

    Keep up the good work

  46. Good01man says:

    I LIKE

    WOULD LIKE TO SEE
    1. If posible i want VIDEO tutorial. Thanks

  47. Albert Thomas says:

Keep the quality content coming and I would like to also see more coverage of the features that many professionals take for granted. For instance the coverage of the pathfinder was great and it really made real sense for the first time. Keep that type of stuff coming.

  48. binocle says:

Globally I think you have a great site, but…

    - Please no more cheap clipart/freebies…

    - It would be nice to have less beginners stuff and more really usefull advanced tips

  49. Zheng Zhang says:

Your website has a wealth of tutorials for beginner to intermediate users. I am wondering if you plan to publish some tutorials on drawing great illustrations for scientific journal articles. Prestigious scientific journals usually set up higher standards for the figures, images and illustrations in a paper.

  50. Hof says:

You can start by using question marks correctly. :P I think the site is pretty solid as is. I would however like to see some tutorials using more advanced techniques.
