On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9 Earthquake hit Japan. The Earthquake and the subsequent Tsunami caused wide spread damage to the country and many people lost their lives. As the shocking events unfolded, artists and designers from across the globe created images to show their support for the people effected by this disaster and began to raise funds for the Japanese disaster relief efforts. Find out how you can help.

Save the Children – Japan Earthquake Tsunami Relief
"Save the Children has been working in Japan for 25 years. In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, Save the Children deployed emergency response teams to assess the needs of children and their families. Multiple child-friendly spaces have been established in evacuation centers in Sendai City where displaced families are staying. Child-friendly spaces provide children with an opportunity to play with other children while freeing up parents to work on the recovery. More child-friendly spaces will be set up in the coming days."
Second Harvest Japan
"Second Harvest Japan collects safe-to-consume food that became unsalable for various reasons from food companies and individual donors. Then, we distribute the food to those in need"

Des images pour le Japon
Artists from the community, joined by comic book writers and illustrators from all around the world rallied around us, Jean-David Morvan and Sylvain Runberg to form the Tsunami initiative. We want to collect a maximum of quality drawings in order to hold a fund-raising auction on April 30th at Galerie Arludik in Paris. All the money we’ll raise will go to the earthquake’s victims. The auction will be followed by an exhibition and a book due out September 8, whose benefits will be offered to an organization for people affected by the disaster.
Feel free to spread the word!

Illustration Rally

Great post, thx for spreading the awareness.
Wonderful article Kate, thank you for bringing Cause For Design to my attention, such a great idea :)
Now I am off to contribute :D
I’ve been living in Japan for over 10 years now, and as a foreign permanent resident, it warms my heart to see the outpouring of support from so many different countries around the world. There is some truly exceptional artwork being showcased here!
However, if I can offer just one bit of advice, it would be for people to get the Japanese they are using in their designs proofread by Japanese people. Victor Hugosson’s “Stay Strong”, for example, while unquestionably being a fine piece, is in need of a better translation. The way it is, the Japanese on the poster literally means ‘Residence strong’. As it is, the translation of ‘stay’ used here (滞在, taizai) conveys the meaning of a period of stay, like a 10-day stay. A closer translation could be ‘頑張れ!’ (gambare: do your best/hang in there/persevere). One of the hardest things about translation is that there are more often than not no direct equivalent translations, so you have to rely on translating to convey overall meaning or feeling, and this is especially the case between Japanese and English. After showing this work to my coworkers, they didn’t understand the intent of the artist: “Does the poster mean we should build stronger houses?”
Just my two yen worth…
Wow! So, so exciting to see so much support and love for Japan within the design community. Thank you for sharing Cause For Design with everyone and we hope all of you reading this post will join the cause…reminding us all to continue supporting our neighbors. :) -Cause For Design
