Workshop: Vector Critique #24

Vectortuts+ is all about helping people turbo charge their skills, and today we have another special community post that will help our readers take their images to the next level. The best thing is, you can be part of it too! Find out more at the jump.

How to Participate:

  • This workshop contributor has offered a piece of work that they would like help with, please keep this in mind when you share your thoughts. The images are not perfect, but they can be with the right advice and some friendly encouragement. (Vectortuts+ reserves the right to delete any rude comments)
  • If you’re better with pictures (let’s face it, most of us are) feel free to take a screenshot of the image using Little Snapper, Skitch or a similar program and paste a link to the annotated image in the comments section with an explanation of the tweaks.

If you want to take part in the next Vectortuts+ Workshop:

Add your work to our facebook photo gallery or submit it via the Tuts+ Workshop form, with a description about the piece and the help/advice you’re looking for. We will chose one to be published on our site as part of the next Vectortuts+ Workshop, if you’re not chosen straight away – don’t worry – your work will be chosen for a future session.

First of all, I think this looks amazing. The only thing I would do to improve is add a little bit of shading to the iris. It looks a little supernatural. If you are going for a natural feel, eyes usually have a darker shading around the outside.

      I agree with this.

Also, having the eyeliner line go all the way down to the tear duct… it seems much too stark. In my opinion, I would end the eyeliner where the lashes end, or at least, have a little bit more definition in the eyeliner.

      Great job :)

The eyebrow looks weird, I think the strokes might be too short and fat. It makes me feel like it is an animal pelt instead of an eyebrow. Also I agree with M.Brenn about the eyeliner.

I agree with the eyebrow hairs, they need to be longer and perhaps if you try putting low opacity radial gradients over the top to alter the colours :)

Fantastic work! I’d love to see a little more gloss on the eyeball itself since the eyes are so wet and sparkly

This is really fantastic work, and I agree with the tips from the other commenters. The other thing I noticed is the shape of the tear duct, it comes to an unnaturally sharp point. Also where it snugs up to the white of the eye it should be round following the curve of the eye ball. Eye lashes are my favourite part! :)

Your eye is beautiful! Instead of the beighe shading under the lower lashes, I would add a line of charcoal eyeliner under the eyelashes. Typically, make up artists do balance the top eyeliner with bottom eyeliner. Otherwise, really, it’s just lovely. Would be willing to work through a tutorial on how you did it.

I would say besides a bit more darkening around the top of the iris, I would point out that the tear duct looks abnormally big, making the eyeball look misshaped. I definitely think it is a great start though.
