If you participate in vector graphics forums, then you might have seen the question “Is there an Autosave feature in Adobe Illustrator?” and theorists would always say “no, there is not,” more often advising to save the work through the Save and Save As commands.

These people are not familiar with these fluttering feelings of delight of a true artist, when vector is so nicely flexible and filled with the desired beauty, when you forget about the time and space, not even mentioning some trivial Shift + S. If you’re one of those artists, I can teach you how to create an “Auto Save” on your own. This technique was developed by my friend Igor Tchernitsyn.

In Part 1 of this two part tutorial series, we learned how to code a script which converts a flat process color into its matching gradient. In this tutorial, we will learn to code a script that converts a gradient fill into a flat process color. We will melt the available gradient color into a flat process color, which will be a mixture of all the colors available in that gradient.

This entire task will be performed via JavaScript script for Illustrator. The tutorial assumes that you’re familiar with the basics of scripting. We all are quite familiar with Adobe Illustrator and its User Interface. In our daily creative tasks we use a lot of features, such as: menu, pallets, colors, plug-ins and tools. We use these features in the form of a UI. These UI features are brought forward to us through various scripts and plug-ins.

In a simpler way, we can code scripts to automate tasks or to obtain some effect in Illustrator. Follow along to learn how to do that. In this tutorial, we will code in Javascript a script that will convert a flat process filled object into its matching gradient.
