Try selecting the edges whichever side you want. It's working perfectly. One thing I noticed when I got into trouble in step 25: Preference setting must NOT be turned on: Object Selection by Path only, like I have always on. This is an old habit of mine to have Illustrator select by path only, since this was the default setting in Illustrator from version 1 up to 8 or so. Very nice.
