That is why I always noted to select the object prior to applying strokes - when nothing is selected, the Appearance panel has the same effects the last selected shape had, that is the feature that confuses sometimes. BTW, though, I can't get the strokes after step 3 to show up. I create them but they don't seem to appear. I even changed the color to pink, purple, etc., just to see and nothing showed, same thing with the stroke when I applied the mezzo tint, it shows up in the appearance panel, but nothing on screen.
