it depends on the studio setup, RIP kind/version and how is the design done. i've worked for 2 years in a prepress studio and seen my share of great designs being entitled 'sloppy' whenever its technical side was brought to question.
on many occasions PDF files won't work (if done sloppy) while PS/EPS of the same file works great... and yeah - few times we had to get the AI file to make it work, cause the designer didn't know what were we talking about and couldn't make needed corrections.

as to the waste of paper - yup, it is. also, using double crop marks with a solid-repeatable background color rather than single crop mark between each unit isn't efficient.

nice tutorial.

the thing that could have been done a little bit different is setting up of crop marks. the background of the design is a single solid color, therefore you don't need to put space between each piece as using only one cutting line is more efficient.
but on the other hand, as some people have mentioned, mainly the printing company sets the sheet by themselves. it all revolves around their specification and machine abilities.

Multiple instances are not necessary, most printers will accept a high resolution PDF and gang up the images themselves to save paper.

It's best to setup print jobs in Indesign or Quark as they handle typography much better.

Nice tutorial none the less

I think the biggest point that was missed here was. Never ever send an Illustrator file to your print service. PDF it. Most of graphics today work with pdfs instead of the old EPS. You can even ask some graphics to send their PDF profiles so it fit better into their specs.

And yeah, thats a lot of waste of paper ><
