In this Quick Tip Video, you will learn how to use a clever trick to make a map element appear to zoom out from its background. Popular with information graphics, this effect is perfect for a variety of creative uses. Let’s get started!

  • gric

    you talk too much
if you really need to talk that much (what is not the case of course) please, don’t do a video… write a text and put some graphics, at least, we could jump a section if not needed… videos disallow users to go with their own rhythm, and make mandatory to listen these kind of never-stopping intrusive and unnecessary flow of speech

    • Bilgin Ozkan

I think you are just being rude. She was well spoken and precise. And at 2:32 seconds, how much can one person possibly talk anyway.

I can’t say I understand where you’re coming from here. The video was only 2 and a half minutes long and I found that the speaker used that time appropriately, and was informative. We should all aspire to have an attention span of at least a few minutes.

      Thanks for the great tut!

    • http://www.yvonne-tang.com Yvonne T

Oh come on, the video is only 2.5 minutes. Plus no one is stopping you from skipping ahead.

Thank you Cheryl for the tutorial!

    • Kenth

She explained what she was doing while doing it. Very informative and pedagogical as far as I’m concerned. You could opt to lowering the volume or just shut the video off. Noone’s forcing you to listen.

    • Steve

ummmm your just rude. I think your the one with the problem!!!

    • HumanNotRobot

I don’t get you “gric”… This was one of the most quick, direct and fast tutorials it can be. Also I love her voice, pretty sexy ; )

All of this not to speak the information she is sharing and again the quickness she shares, she does not do all that bull…: “Hello, my name is…bla bla bla” and “Thank to stand by…” or “See you the next time…” She even speaks FAST dude! What’s your problem?

Anyway thanks pretty sexy voice and useful fast quick tip girl…

I really liked your tutorial apart that I’m a really advanced experienced guy! The break to listen you even gives some inspiration and relaxation…
Keep it going and do not listen this kind of critiques…
      All the best from Portugal

    • HumanNotRobot

Hey just to say that thanks to the “gric” and to his bad critique, I get a little bit enthusiastic about your other tutorials and I’m following them… Awesome tips in some… Even me have not thought in some of them…

Nice! Again keep that voice and good tuts coming…. ; )
      Regards from Portugal

Nice tip! I’ve actually come across a situation like this where I needed to do something similar but just didn’t know where to start. One of the major difficulties that I had was trying to make sure that the beveling of the shape stood out properly whilst looking appropriate in place, as you showed.

One question, would it be possible to use this kind of effect with a hover over effect on a website? I would imagine that it would be complicated but possible… I only ask as being a web designer myself, it’d be great to be able to have something like this, maybe on a more dynamic basis, on a website.

However, for simply just answering the question, a question I’ve long struggled with, as to how to do this, thanks!

You’re awesome, I was waiting for your next video tutorial and here you go!, nice tutorial but you know why I watch your tutorials:)

This is an excellent tutorial. I was looking for this on google and your site came up. Thanks For sharing with us. :-)

  • Jonathan Miller

I am a beginner, and I need to do this for work, however, the video does not explain how to even get that state extracted. I can make a rectangle over the state, but it does not form the lines of the state.
