A very impressive tutorial wich is VERY usefull and of course: tells us a lot of uses and shotcuts of the Illustrator tools, for example in my case with some tips you gave there, i can make my work in less time. I really liked what you did with the “glow” and the “rays”. How you played with the copy tool and the “random” thinguie. I alhave always liked to see how designers work, i can see how skilled you are. And sir: YOU ARE VERY SKILLED and of course: TALENTED. You have my respects. Keep up your creativity and good work!

where can i find the last image for texture part

  • Few Schnickens

    I’m with Harsh.

I’ve spent a couple of hours now on the first few minutes of this tutorial and I just can’t get it to work.
I’m just getting a uniform black no gradient even though it say the cmyk values are right. This and so many other short tutorials often just don’t work. I have wasted hours and hours and driven myself mad on short turorials with missing info, or a lack of explanation for when things don’t work out, oversights usually on the part of the expert who does not think of the kind of problems that may occur for the less adept, although this tutorial and many others on vector tuts are otherwise very good.

Often its too late to make it worth posting in the comments section requesting help and on the odd occaison when I have done the comment has not been published (on other sites). It’s very frustrating. I would be a fricken whizz by now otherwise. Btw I’m not too bad, have very good eyesight and color sense and an hd screen.

Anyone else have these kinds of problems? Would it be possible to set up some sort of troubleshooting cllnic? It can’t be just me and Harsh surely?

What part are you having problems with? From what I can see the first few steps are,

      1. make the gradient background

      2. add a new layer and make a circle

      3. make an oval over the top of the circle and move it below (in this tut that’s done with the sub layers menu)

      4. Select both the circle and the oval and make a blend between the two (Object > Blend > Make) make sure the blend option is set to smooth color.

Then the tutorial moves onto adding the gradient lines and the rest of the effects.

      I hope this helps :)

I’m missing something on the blend step. I have the circle and the oval in the proper spot, but when I try and blend the blend goes into transparency. I have to be overlooking something. Can you help me?

      Few Schnickens and Harsh,

Just like LoungeKat said – let me know where exaclty you get stuck and I’ll try to shed some light on the techniques. Even though, I believe I explain everything as I do it, this is an Intermediate tutorial so I presume you have the basic Illustrator skills.

      Few Schnickens,

I gave it a go myself and I think I understand where you’re having problem at the beginning.
When you creating the background gradient, the two colors will be very similar. They are both very dark, thus, they won’t differ much on screen. The real difference will show up when you print it. The outer color will be pitch black, while the one in the center will have a faint red tint.

Don’t forget to change document color settings from CMYK to RGB. You’ll get the red color instead of white when you change it to screen transparent setting.
